Carolina Lujan: Trying to be a professional chess player |
 Anastasia Karlovich: And once again welcome to the press center! We have a guest from Argentina – Carolina Lujan, who just won a game with White against Alisa Galliamova. How did the game go?
Carolina Lujan: It was very tense. We both had many options, I had to search for the best moves all the time. Now I won and can take a breath, but I am still a bit nervous.
– What was the key moment of the game?
– I didn't like her 19…h6 – after this move Black cannot castle, and White can develop a strong attack on the black king that is stuck in the center. Defending such positions is very difficult, and especially in the time trouble.
– How many times have you participated in the World Championships?
– This is my fourth championship.

Ekaterina Kovalevskaya: "The most correct tournament is the one you win" |
 Anastasia Karlovich: Ekaterina Kovalevskaya won as Black against Nino Khurtsidze in just 22 moves. What happened in your game?
Ekaterina Kovalevskaya: Already on the move 8 Nino started to think. We play with Khurtsidze for many years and I think we tried every possible opening. Today it was somewhat resembling the Tarrasch, either improved or downgraded, I am not sure. Her 8.g3 was a nice surprise for me, as Black's problems after it are pretty much over. I get an extra tempo, and the white queen gets attacked. All in all, I enjoyed seeing this move.

Guliskhan Nakhbayeva: "I prepared for this championship twice" |
 Anastasia Karlovich: Please welcome Gulikhsan Nakhbayeva from Kazakhstan. In her first game she made a draw with Tan Zhongyi from China, but we'll start with a different topic. Gulikhsan, how did you qualify for the championship?
Gulikhsan Nakhbayeva: Hello, dear chess fans! I qualified through a zonal championship that took place in 2013. I won it and received an opportunity to participate in this grandiose competition, This is my first World Championship.
– How did you prepare for it?
– There are several coaches working for our federation. Last year a professional chess club was established in Astana, and it invited international grandmasters Yuri Yakovich from Russia and Murtas Kazhgaleyev from Kazakhstan. They both helped me. As you know, the dates for this championship were unclear for quite a long time. Initially I was preparing to play in 2014, and then did all preparation for the second time, when the current schedule of the championship was confirmed.

Press-conference on the Chess in Schools project |
 A press-conference dedicated to cooperation of the Sistema Charity Fund and the Non-profit Partnership Chess in Schools aimed at introducing chess into the Russian school curriculum and increasing the role of chess in general education took place at the Women's World Chess Championship press center on March 17.
It was attended by the FIDE President Kirsan Ilyumzhinov, legendary former World Champion Nona Gaprindashvili, the President of the Sistema Charity Fund Tatiana Gvilava, and the Chairman of the Non-profit organization Women in Business Galina Roketskaya.
The Chess at schools project in Russia was initiated by the FIDE President Kirsan Ilyumzhinov and approved by the Russian President Vladimir Putin. It includes developing school textbooks and teachers' manuals as well as organizing scholastic chess tournaments. Apart from that, cooperation with the Russian Ministry of Education and other relevant institutions in necessary for introducing chess into the curriculum.

 The first round of the Women's World Championship (Sochi, Krasnaya Polyana), attended by 64 players from 28 countries, was played today at the CS Galactica.
Igor Levitin, adviser of the Russian President, made a symbolic first move of the championship in the game of the highest rated player Humpy Koneru (India).
In a first round of a knock-out tournament the top rated players face the lowest rated opponents, therefore many games were quite one-sided, and many favorites won without much trouble. Yet, there were a couple of upsets.
The ex-World Champion Antoaneta Stefanova (Bulgaria), playing White, barely held her game to a draw. Maria Muzychuk (Ukraine) and Alisa Galliamova (Russia) even lost to a much lower-rated opponents Yuan Yuanling (Canada) and Carolina Lujan (Argentina).
