Irina Krush: Fresh mind is the main factor
IMG 5219The American Irina Krush came to the press center late on Saturday after earning a hard-fought draw with Harika Dronavalli, which sent both players to the tie-break.

Anastasia Karlovich: Good evening, dear friends, and please welcome Irina Krush from USA. Her classical match with Harika Dronavalli saw two draws. How did it go?

Irina Krush: I should thank the fate for still being here after these two games. In both of them I was defending very unpleasant positions, but managed to survive. If I want to win, I need to get positions of a different kind?

Valentina Gunina and her year-long preparation
IMG 4298The three-time Russian champion Valentina Gunina won her second match with the same 2-0 score and came to the press center to share her impressions from the first two matches.

Anastasia Karlovich: Please welcome Valentina Gunina, who just defeated Olga Girya and advanced to the next stage. Valya, could you tell about your first match, how did you win so easily?

Valentina Gunina: I don't think there can be any easy matches at this tournament, but in the first round my opponent really liked to think for a long time.

Alexandra Kosteniuk: "The initiative makes life easier"
IMG 4498The 12th World Champion Alexandra Kosteniuk was the first player to advance to the 3rd round after making a rather quick draw with Shen Yang in the second game of their match, which secured her the sufficient score 1.5-0.5.

In the press center Alexandra talked about her game and the visit of the Russian Prime Minister.

Anastasia Karlovich: Good afternoon, dear friends, and welcome to the press center. Please welcome the 12th World Champion Alexandra Kosteniuk, who just won her match against Shen Yang from China by drawing the second game. Alexandra, how did your game go?

Alexandra Kosteniuk: It was not easy, though one can hardly get such impression by playing out the game. After the opening I did something wrong and started to dislike my position. Despite spending 40 minutes on my two next moves, I still could not find a proper plan. Fortunately, the position still was roughly equal. I am not so sure about my pawn sacrifice 20.e5, but I decided to go for it as I figured it would be easier to play having the initiative. 27.Rxd7 tactics is also not necessary – Black could hardly make any progress at all.

The second games of the 2nd round are played at the Women's World Championship in Sochi
